A HINT OF HISTORY
The most ancient parchment that mentions Ampezzo dates back to 1156 and is now kept in the City Archives of San Vito. The document deals with land purchase in the "territorio de Ampicio" by Giovanni and Paganello, two brothers from Cadore. The full name "Curtina Ampitii", appears for the first time only in 1317, in document now kept in the Archives of the Regola Alta di Lareto.

Cortina d’Ampezzo was formed by a central village and many external ones. Cortina was the central and principal, not only for it’s geographical position, but also because it held the church, the school, the inns and town authorities. Because of its importance, the name Cortina expanded to the whole valley. This name, Cortina, derives from the ancient cemetery walls, from latin "cohors" (fence), that were built all around the central church, SS. Filippo and Giacomo. Nowadays "cortina" means cemetery in ladin.

For some scholars Ampezzo takes its original meaning from the open shape of the valley, from latin "amplus" (wide, open space), from which then AMPLITIUM/AMPITIUM. The old german denomination of the valley also goes back to this meaning of open space: HEIDENTAL, the valley of heath, the desolate land. Heidenthal has also been interpreted as "valley of heathens", because of the late conversion to Christianity of its inhabitants, but we find it hard to believe. Some other scholars believe A-MPEZZO to derive from the latin "piceus", in ladin "pezuó", red fir-tree.

Another hypothesis finds the origin of the name Ampezzo in a pre-latin prefix, AMP-, AMB-, that indicates "wild plants, from which a liquid is extracted and used for fermentation". These give birth to a variety of words for "rasberyy" in the north-atesine valleys: ampela (Val Lagarina), ampoma (Val di Sole), ampomes (Val Gardena).
